New Flash Frameworks from Adobe
Here’s a quick run down of what these new projects are all about
Two new Flash-related open source projects were released by Adobe this week: The Text Layout Framework which promises to deliver advanced, easy-to-integrate text and typography layout features for more sophisticated and innovative typography on the Web, and the Open Source Media Framework (formerly known as “Strobe”) which can be used for building robust, feature rich video players and applications based on the Adobe® Flash® Platform.
Text Layout Framework (TLF)
The Text Layout Framework is an extensible library, built on the new text engine in Adobe Flash Player 10, which delivers multi-lingual, print-quality typography for the Web. Here’s what you can use it for:
- You can use TLF to display your text vertically or horizontally.
- TLF can translate your text into another language through a cilck of a button. Languages include Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Lao, and the major writing systems of India plus more.
- Text can be selected, edited and flowed text across multiple columns and linked containers, and around inline images.
- Rich typographical controls are possible, including kerning, ligatures, typographic case, digit case, digit width and discretionary hyphens.
- Text can be cut, copied, pasted, undone. Standard keyboard and mouse gestures for editing can also be employed.
- Finally, there is a rich developer API available to manipulate text content, layout and markup to allow the creation of custom text components.
Open Source Media Framework (OSMF)
The Open Source Media Framework enables developers to easily assemble pluggable components to create high-quality, full-featured playback experiences for both audio and video. The open aspect of the framework enables collaborative development for web video monetization, with lower costs and faster turnaround. Here are some more benefits of OSMF:
- OSMF simplifies player creation/development, allowing the developer more time to focus on the overall user experience.
- Flexible architecture allows developers to easily customize their player for the browser or the desktop, incorporating plug-ins for advertising, reporting and content delivery.
- Easier to control the design and functionality of standard player features such as playback controls, video navigation, buffering, and Dynamic Streaming.
- The simple API will allow the OSMF media framework to be integrated into your own custom applications. You can also deploy the ready-to-run dynamic SWF player without compiling or writing custom scripts.
